Brienne of Tarth is an incredibly strong and skilled warrior. She has large blue eyes and straw-colored hair. Brienne has been the victim of contempt and rejection for most of her life. Whenever she tried to dress and behave like a lady, she was always teased and looked down upon for her lack of femininity and social grace. When she finally devoted herself to a career more suited to her—becoming a warrior—despite her extraordinary abilities, she received further scorn and resentment because of her gender.

Probably due to her past, Brienne has an awkward personality, much like her appearance. She gives her loyalty to those few who treat her with courtesy and respect. The daughter of the Lord of Tarth, Brienne initially serves Renly Baratheon. After being wrongly accused of Renly's murder, Brienne swears allegiance to Catelyn Tully. Brienne then develops a complex friendship-hate relationship with Jaime Lannister. Catelyn Tully assigns her the task of escorting Jaime Lannister to King's Landing and freeing him in exchange for Sansa and Arya, but along the way, they are captured by the Bloody Mummers, who cut off Jaime’s hand. Brienne feels responsible and has since been much more protective of him than before.

Upon arriving in King's Landing, Jaime assigns Brienne the task of finding Sansa Stark, who disappeared after Joffrey Baratheon's murder. With little information, Brienne travels first to Rosby, Duskendale, and then Maidenpool.

She is joined on her journey by Ser Hyle Hunt, an old suitor of Brienne, and Podrick Payne, Tyrion Lannister's former squire, who fled King's Landing to avoid retribution. Almost by chance, Brienne learns that a girl has been seen wandering the riverlands and, hopeful, sets off. However, the girl turns out not to be Sansa, but Arya. Upon reaching the Salty Pans, Brienne and her companions are captured by the Brotherhood Without Banners, led by the resurrected corpse of Lady Catelyn Stark. She had been killed by the Freys and brought back to life by the magic of Thoros of Myr and the sacrifice of Beric Dondarrion. Brienne confesses her service to the Lannisters, and Lady Catelyn accuses her of treason, sentencing her and her companions to death. Brienne, however, manages to save them by vowing to bring Jaime Lannister to the Brotherhood, and in the fifth book, she returns to Jaime with the intent to lead him to Lady Catelyn.

She becomes a main character starting from A Feast for Crows.

In the television series Game of Thrones, based on the books, Brienne is portrayed by Gwendoline Christie, and in the Italian version, she is voiced by Stella Gasparri. Brienne's story remains largely faithful to the novels until she is tasked by Jaime with finding Sansa. During her journey, she is accompanied only by Podrick, who is depicted as a grown man, unlike in the books, and Brienne teaches him the art of sword fighting. She is the one who defeats Sandor Clegane and later, a few months later, reaches the North, where she rescues Sansa Stark and swears allegiance to her. When Sansa and Jon prepare to face Ramsay Bolton, Sansa sends Brienne to the Water Delta to convince Ser Brynden Tully to support them, though unsuccessfully.

In the months following the recapture of Winterfell, Brienne continues to be Sansa's personal guard. When a meeting is held in King's Landing to ask Cersei to support them in the fight against the White Walkers, Sansa sends Brienne in her place, relying on Brienne's good influence over Jaime Lannister. As Sansa had hoped, Brienne manages to persuade Jaime to bring his siblings together. After returning to Winterfell, she participates in the preparation for the defense, and when only Jaime Lannister arrives at the fortress, she speaks in his defense. Before the battle, she is knighted, becoming the first female knight of the Seven Kingdoms. During the battle, she fights alongside Jaime and survives. That night, she spends the night with him, but when the war with Cersei begins again, Jaime decides to leave to save her, despite Brienne's pleas. After Bran Stark is appointed as the new King, Ser Brienne of Tarth becomes the new Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and a member of the Small Council.
